Zurich University and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) are situated within a five minute walking distance. Both lie on the Zurich "cultural mile", which also boasts the Calatrava library and the Kunsthaus (Zurich Art Museum). Thanks to this central location the city centre, the lake, the hotels and the main station are easily reachable both on foot or by public transport.

Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology is a science and technology university with an excellent research reputation. Modern facilities on 315 000 square meters are used by 18 000 students and researchers from Switzerland and all over the world. ETH Zurich and ETH Lausanne are the only national universities in Switzerland. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich was founded in 1855, when also its main building was constructed by Johann Gottfried Semper.

Zürich University. With more than 23 000 students and 2700 university teachers, Zurich University is the largest university in Switzerland. Founded in 1833, it nowadays offers research, education, and services through about 140 institutes, departments and hospitals. It accomodates faculties for theology, law, economics, medicine, art, math-science and veterinary medicine (Vetsuisse). Zurich University was the first university in Europe founded by a state and not by the church or feudal authority. As early as 1847, women were allowed to attend the arts lectures, while today more than 50% of the students are female. The main building at Rämistrasse 71 was constructed in 1914 by architect Karl Moser.
